Your product is a conversation with the market

Des Traynor and John Collison on Stripe's Cheeky Pint podcast

A while back I watched this talk from two legends of the software world: Des Traynor of Intercom and John Collison of Stripe.

I love these discussions and this series I find to be a relaxing, fun environment. How could you not enjoy watching a couple of smart people sharing a Guinness or two, discussing topics you've always wanted to ask them about?

A few quotes that really stuck with me:

A product is a conversation with the market.
Your launch is your opening bit, and then you have to basically adapt and react to what gets thrown back at you, which might drag you in different directions. And then you need to have, again, the confidence to prune certain things.
People massively underestimate what it means to have a truly happy customer base.
Word of mouth doesn’t have a UTM code.
Don’t afford yourself too much freedom on pricing. You will end up crippling yourself in a quagmire of complexity.

The whole discussion is worth a watch or a listen.

And it's worth noting that since this aired, the company Des co-founded, Intercom (and Fin) sold to Salesforce for $3.6 billion.
